Green Campus

Environmental efforts on campuses include innovative conservation and recycling efforts—everything from paper, to food, to water. In addition, utilizing technology and design to control heating and ventilation reduces overall energy consumption.

  • “Smart” Irrigation System Saves Water Use

In the past, the Amgen Longmont facility in Colorado typically used more than 94,000 cubic meters of irrigation water per year. The installation of a “smart” irrigation system that monitors weather conditions and adjusts watering schedules has helped the facility reduce irrigation water usage by more than 30,000 cubic meters per year.

  • Compost Programs Include all but the Kitchen Sink

Amgen Washington has a greener campus through composting kitchen food waste and restroom paper towel waste. The site began diverting kitchen food waste from the cafeteria about two years ago and more recently expanded the cafeteria composting program to include post-consumer waste such as food scraps and napkins. Innovative composting efforts have also been adopted by other Amgen sites. At the Washington site, thanks to the composting project, trash pick-ups have been reduced by 30 percent.

  • Changes in Heating and Cooling Systems Reduce CO2 Emissions

Amgen Rhode Island reduced energy use by optimizing the number of steam boilers that support site operations. As a result, CO2 emissions will be reduced by approximately 227 metric tons per year— equal to taking 35 cars off the road. The site also installed carbon dioxide sensors in several conference rooms to detect when the rooms are unoccupied, resulting in lower heating and cooling costs.
