Amgen laboratories on a number of campuses have reduced their use of energy and others have retooled their chemical management process.
- New Technology Heats, Cools and Ventilates Labs on a Budget
As part of Amgen’s Energy Reduction Program, the Amgen Washington Helix campus engineering team installed new instrumentation and controls to reduce the ventilation rates of laboratory spaces during unoccupied periods, which account for approximately 60 percent of the total ventilation. The efforts resulted in a reduction of energy use by 15,000 gigajoules and carbon dioxide emissions by 1,700 metric tons.
- Chemical Inventory Control Reduces Waste and Hazardous Chemical Storage
Laboratory work across the company requires the use of chemical compounds. Keeping track of those chemicals—how they’re purchased, used, stored and disposed of—is a complex task. To make the process more efficient, Amgen has designed a chemical management program focused on reducing waste, decreasing the amount of hazardous chemicals stored on site and ensuring proper disposal of chemicals. Under this program, Amgen Thousand Oaks has significantly reduced the total volume of chemicals stored on site from 2006 levels.
