Carmen A. Arce
Haydee Caballero Torres School
Caguas, Puerto Rico

Carmen Arce's approach to science teaching is based on providing multi-sensorial experiences to students both in and out of the classroom. To this end, she uses high-tech devices such as computers, graphic calculators and audiovisual equipment. She also integrates arts, music, math, and physical education to stimulate and focus her students' attention. In addition, Ms. Arce organizes expeditions to locations of scientific interest around the island of Puerto Rico, allowing her students to observe concepts learned in the classroom.

Edna I. Berríos
Jose Morales Berdecia School
Barranquitas, Puerto Rico

Preparing scientific conceptual maps using non-traditional methods -- including graffiti, collages, poems and models created with household materials -- is part of the approach used by Edna Berríos to keep the interest level of her students high. Ms. Berríos created the "Young Scientists in Action" Club at her school, which engages students in projects like growing a vegetable garden, helping them not only understand processes of agriculture and biology, but also grow and consume the crops themselves.

Grissel Bonilla
Casiano Cepeda High School
Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

In teaching physics and environmental sciences courses at her school, Grissel Bonilla combines classroom activities with field trips to different places in which students can get into more contact with nature. Taking advantage of an allocation of federal funds resulting from the No Child Left Behind Act, she established an after-hours extended program at Casiano Cepeda High School. Through this program, Ms. Bonilla emphasizes science methodologies, stimulating critical thinking regardless of each student's academic level.

Ernesto Sánchez
Angel Gonzalez School
Juncos, Puerto Rico

Ernesto Sánchez combines field experiences, parent involvement and strict discipline as he shares his knowledge of science with his third grade students. The subject matter of his classes includes the classification of plants and leaves, visits to the habitats of different animals and the evaluation of soils. Mr. Sánchez promotes parental participation in the educational process by assigning homework activities that require interaction between parent and student.
