Aurea V. Rosario Bonilla
Ana Dalila Burgos School
Orocovis, Puerto Rico

Ms. Rosario has successfully integrated computer technology her classes, helping students understand phenomenon such as tectonic plaques movement and other geological principles. For over 22 years, she had promoted a cooperative education approach, which help students to learn not only science but important social skills that will make them better citizens and professionals in the future. She also has worked towards integrating science and math classes at her school.

 

Rosa M. Batista Cancel
Manuel Fernández Juncos School
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico

Combining theoretical knowledge with dynamic classroom exercises, Ms. Cancel has made science learning fun for her students. The 15-year teacher has gone beyond her responsibilities, submitting proposals to different agencies and private sector organizations, to provide her school with a state-of-the-art science lab that serves not only students but also other science teachers who participate in different workshops. She founded an Environmental Protection Club for students, as well as a Future Scientists and Engineering Club to promote early interest of students in pursuing careers in science.

 
 

Zulma N. Torres González
Catalina Morales School
Moca, Puerto Rico

Ms. Torres’ excellence as science educator has been acknowledged by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, as she has been participating for several years as “Mentor Teacher” of both institutions’ science education enhancement programs. Field trips, computer simulation exercises, laboratory activities and open class discussions are the main vehicles this teacher uses to keep her students focused on the principles of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences.

 
 

Elliot López Machado
Juan Ponce de León School
Florida, Puerto Rico

Mr. López created an Environmental Research Center at his school, devoted to the study of the tropical forests located in the school’s surroundings. This facility serves as complement to the classroom work performed by this science teacher. He also established a weather monitoring center at the school, and created a local diffusion radio program to educate about the importance of environmental protection.
