Laylannie Torres González
Francisco Torres School
Las Piedras, Puerto Rico

Since 1999, Laylannie Torres Gonzàlez has been the teacher others turn to at Francisco Torres de las Piedra. “She is at the forefront of teaching,” say administrators at her school. She leads many training workshops in math and technology. For two consecutive years she was unanimously voted “Teacher of Excellence.” Gonzàlez follows in her mother’s footsteps in becoming a teacher. As a child she grew up playing “school” with her dolls. Her warm smile and intuitive teaching methods add a spark to her classroom.

 
 

Sol Enid León León
Manuel Martín Monserrate School
Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico

TSol Enid León León does not forget where she came from. As a girl in Santa Isabel, a small city on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, she attended Manuel Martín Monserrate and graduated with highest honors. After earning a Master of Arts with a specialization in science at Caribbean University in Ponce, she returned to the Monserrate school to teach science. She is well on he way to earning a Ph. D. from Caribbean University, but just as important as her career is her family: she is married and has two sons.
 
 

Wanda I. Peña
Natividad Rodriguez González School
Arroyo, Puerto Rico

Wanda Peña of Arroyo, Puerto Rico, approaches teaching biology with a sense of mission. “She strongly believes in the public education of our island, and no effort is small when helping a student to reach his or her dreams,” say her colleagues at Navidad Rodrigues González. To connect with her students, Pena incorporates homemade materials into lab experiments and also serves a counselor in the school’s Medicine Club. Pena was named “Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year” in Puerto Rico by the National Association of Biology Teachers, and she has served on Arroyo’s Science Fair Steering Committee for eleven years.
 
 

Ana Rosado Torres
Luz A. Cruz de Santana School
Humacao, Puerto Rico

Ana Rosada Torres grew up in Puerto Rico, the fourth of sixteen siblings. Her career as a teacher began after she was married when she obtained her Master’s Degree in Curriculum Design at the Universidad del Turabo. She teaches a total of one hundred and twenty six students in both fifth and sixth grades. Rosado Torres sits on the Board of Directors of the Master Teachers Leadership Mentoring Organization.
