Martha Landes
Park View Middle School
Cranston, Rhode Island

Tough but fair, Martha Landes has a rare ability to instill in her students, the desire to learn. A former pharmacist, Ms. Landes found her calling in the science classroom. As a department leader, she now mentors new teachers and shares ideas, having piloted new materials and helped revise curriculum materials for grades K-9. The contributions of Ms. Landes go beyond science; she also works on a literacy training program, helping high-risk students increase their literacy skills.

John Wemple
Classical High School
Providence, Rhode Island

Many of John Wemple's students are drawn to a college major in biology after taking his classes in biology and anatomy and physiology. Mr. Wemple excels at inventing new ways to keep students involved, such as the "Coffee Shop," where students read a scientific paper and write a one-page abstract, then discuss it over tea the next day as in the scientific salons of Europe. Mr. Wemple's Advanced Placement classes are well-attended, and his success can be measured by his students' high scores. Whether teaching, mentoring or coaching, he brings a youthful enthusiasm to his craft that his students enjoy.
