Randy James
North Central High School
Spokane, WA

Randy James has been a teacher for 27 years, the last 20 years at North Central High School, where he teaches Advanced Placement Biology and Biological Solutions. He is also the department chair and serves as the school’s science instructional facilitator. Mr. James engages his students in authentic and original research projects in an effort to underscore the relevance of science in today’s world. For example, his students are currently genotyping a threatened subspecies of Rainbow Trout to measure the degree of introgression that has occurred with other introduced subspecies. Mr. James, a winner of a Toyota Tapestry Grant and an M.J. Murdock Partners in Science Fellowship, was recently named the 2004 National Biotechnology Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Biology Teachers. “I believe that science is for all, and that all students are capable of learning at high levels if given the opportunity,” he said. “I truly believe that I will see my students win Nobel awards.”
