Amgen Ties for Number 1 Spot in Pharmaceutical Executive Industry Audit
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Pharmaceutical Executive’s Industry Audit, which analyzed the financial and overall performance of 16 publicly traded pharmaceutical and biotech companies, ranked Amgen at number 1, sharing the top honors with Genentech.
When the Industry Audit results were tallied, Amgen and Genentech each received a comprehensive score of 922 points. Even though they had the same final score and tied for first place, the category scores were different. Amgen had higher sales and scored well on a number of metrics, but Genentech's enterprise value scored higher.
The audit went beyond standard accounting and financial statements to assess overall company performance. Companies were assigned scores based on their rankings in a comprehensive list of 15 key metrics. The categories included enterprise value 2004 vs. 2003, enterprise value to sales, R&D spend, R&D to sales, earnings per share, price to earnings, growth, gross margin, profits to sales, sales to assets, profits to assets, assets to net worth, profit to net worth, U.S. sales per domestic rep, sales per employee, percentage of revenues from new products, and return on invested capital.
The complete, detailed results were published in the September 2005 issue of Pharmaceutical Executive.
Amgen Ranks Number 2 in Science’s 2005 Top Biotech and Pharma Employers Survey

For the fourth consecutive year, Amgen has been ranked among the top 20 biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the Top Employers Survey, conducted by Science magazine. Amgen ranked number 2 in this year’s survey, up from the fourth slot in 2004.
The survey, conducted in April and May of 2005, culled the opinions of Science readers and subscribers, along with members of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Survey respondents were asked to write in the names of companies they considered the industries’ best, average and worst employers.
Participants then rated these organizations using 42 different attributes across seven different categories. The categories included Corporate Image, Leadership and Direction, Financial Prowess, Work Culture/Environment, Work/Life Balance, Academics and Collegial Exchange, and Compensation and Benefits.
Finally, a mathematical process determined the attributes with the greatest driving impact on the reputation of a company/employer. The top 20 companies represent the highest scoring organizations among an initial list of 459. A total of 1,566 completed surveys were collected.
Genentech has ranked first on the list since the survey’s inception four years ago, and this year was no exception. Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson, both of which outranked Amgen last year, fell to 7 and 3, respectively, in the 2005 tally.

Barron's Survey of the Most Respected Corporations Ranks Amgen in Top 20
These two significant accomplishments come on the heels of Amgen’s high ranking in Barron’s inaugural Survey of the Most Respected Corporations. Amgen was ranked Number 14 on the list of 100 companies worldwide. Fourteen pharmaceutical companies made the list, but only one ranked above Amgen.
