Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT)
Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) occurs as a result of chronic kidney disease when the parathyroid glands make too much parathyroid hormone (PTH) because of imbalances in phosphorus and calcium. The parathyroid glands are four small glands in the neck that produce PTH. In healthy people, PTH helps maintain blood calcium balance and healthy bones.

Secondary HPT can progress over time and may be associated with bone disease. Some people with Secondary HPT don’t have any symptoms, other people may notice weakness, itchy skin, aches and bone pain. People with Secondary HPT should keep their PTH, calcium, and phosphorus levels within the recommended KDOQI™ range to keep their disease from progressing.

KDOQI is a trademark of the National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
