Staff

Bike to Breda

Many staff in Breda enjoy a two-wheeled commute. Read more...

At Amgen, environmental sustainability begins with our staff, who research and implement new approaches that both reduce our environmental footprint and improve efficiency. Staff are disciplined about conserving resources and are dedicated volunteers in the community.

Honoring Environmental Champions

Amgen honors staff who make an outstanding commitment to the environment, both at home and at work with our Environmental Champions awards program. In 2015, we named champions at several sites in the United States. We honored one staff member for establishing and maintaining wildlife watering stations, performing trail work, and leading kids on trail bike rides in the Santa Monica Mountains. We awarded another for regularly commuting by bike 23 miles round trip, for participation in a land conservancy organization, and for her beautiful nature photography. We named another champion for promoting recycling of waste streams associated with device engineering for our combination product medicines in development.

As one staff member said, “our environmental champions demonstrate that intensely busy, active, full-time working people can practice sustainability in important and impactful ways.”

Reaching Out in the Community

  • Staff from the east and west coasts of the United States and Puerto Rico participated in the International Coastal Cleanup, a global volunteering effort in which participants clear waterways and beaches of trash while collecting data that supports the Ocean Conservancy in its goal of trash-free seas. Amgen staff participated in the 25th annual Clean Up Australia Day, joining more than 500,000 volunteers across Australia to rid the environment of trash. Staff in Massachusetts participate each year in a cleanup at Kendall Square in Cambridge. The National Parks Service and Ventura County honored Amgen volunteers for their commitment to the community and the environment in 2015.
  • The Amgen Foundation is deeply committed to fostering the next generation of scientific innovators, including our support of important initiatives that advance environmental education in our local communities, such as NatureBridge school programs at Golden Gate National Park campus and in the Santa Monica Mountains. We also help to further staff contributions of personal time, energy, and talents to these important causes through Amgen Volunteers and the Amgen Foundation Matching Gift Program.

Sustainable Commuting

Amgen supports carpools, vanpools, public transportation vouchers, bicycle commuting, and electric car charging where possible. We tailor our alternative transportation programs to the resources available in the communities where Amgen operates facilities.

Programs at selected sites grew in 2015.

  • At our site in South San Francisco, we launched a new vanpool program that is transporting approximately 55 staff and significantly reducing environmental impact when compared with single-person commuting by car.
  • More than 70 percent of staff at our site in Cambridge, Massachusetts, use alternative transportation modes for their daily commute. Massachusetts honored Amgen with an Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) award at the Pinnacle level for staff commitment to mass transit.

Biking is big at our site in Breda, the Netherlands. Nearly 100 staff members bike to work.

Staff Share Education

Amgen celebrated Earth Day at most of its US-based locations in 2015. Events encouraged staff to develop environmentally friendly habits both at work and at home in the areas of recycling, composting, waste reduction, resource conservation, and alternative commuting. Water conservation was of special importance in 2015, and Earth Day events focused on things that staff can do at home and at work to conserve water, especially during times of drought. Several sites also held events in support of America Recycles Day, collecting eyeglasses for redistribution and more than four metric tons of e-waste. In Puerto Rico, where clean energy options are limited, our manufacturing facility held an annual event to promote energy conservation.
