Amgen has arrived at an exciting point of maturity for green building design and construction. We have tested practices both in the renovation of existing buildings and in new construction. We're proud of our success, with three buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, one at LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental and Design) Platinum, one at LEED Gold, and another at LEED Certified.
Buildings that are better for the environment can also be more friendly places to work, incorporating features that promote wellness and efficiency. In 2015, we conducted extensive planning and preparation for the next evolution of workspaces at Amgen that will be more environmentally responsible in construction, operation, and maintenance and will promote collaboration and innovation.
These Next-Generation lab and office spaces will be more flexible and adaptable for ways in which people work in teams or on their own in focused activity. Staff will have more access to natural light, while the buildings conserve greater amounts of energy and water. The new labs are engineered to be modular and easy to reconfigure, minimizing waste from change. They are designed to use equipment and space more efficiently, therefore creating a smaller environmental footprint. Energy-efficient fume hoods and ventilation systems will consume significantly less energy than traditional labs. We have begun implementation of these more efficient designs, coincident with the changing geographic footprint of the company.
Though we've achieved higher rankings on certain projects, Amgen targets many renovation and construction projects at a minimum of LEED Silver.
Green Manufacturing Design
In 2015, we continued to prepare our new facility in Singapore for regulatory review and approval. At this facility, innovations in drug-substance manufacturing will allow us to produce the same annual output as a conventional facility in a significantly smaller footprint. This Next-Generation Biomanufacturing approach vastly reduces water use, and the smaller footprint requires less energy. We have filed for Green Mark certification (Gold level) for this facility.
Amgen also uses more efficient technologies for drug-product manufacturing that reduce the use of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, saving energy and reducing carbon emissions at our existing conventional manufacturing facilities. For example, more efficient technologies, combined with utility improvements, allowed us to continue to expand operations at our drug-product facility in Ireland, which achieved full build-out in 2015, without significant increases in energy use and carbon emissions.
