Products and Packaging

We continue to integrate environmentally friendly practices where possible for packaging, delivery devices, and life-cycle management associated with our products, including combination product medicines. We are also working to improve our understanding of the environmental footprint of each of our medicines from research and development to end of use.

Product Sustainability Profiles

Meetings
With multiple new product launches, we continued to create sample product sustainability profiles and scores for selected products as part of our product life-cycle management program. These profiles look at such criteria as the manufacturing processes used; the sustainability factors of product packaging and devices, if applicable; and product disposal. We use the profiles as a benchmarking tool to assess areas for improvement.

Packaging

Nearly 100 percent of the paper used in all elements of Amgen's secondary packaging for clinical and commercial products is sourced from certified-sustainable forests. As of 2015, at our largest manufacturing facility, located in Puerto Rico, we use 100 percent sustainable, forest-certified content in our paperboard cartons and corrugated shippers. At our facility in the Netherlands, we primarily use this sustainable content in our corrugated shippers.

Amgen assesses the secondary packaging for all marketed products with a Green Packaging Design rating system.

Combination Products and Delivery Systems

Amgen provides environmentally responsible mailback programs for disposal of home-administered injectables associated with our combination products—medicines administered by delivery devices—such as Enbrel® (etanercept) and two new combination products launched in 2015, the Neulasta® Onpro kit and Repatha® (evolocumab). In 2015, patients who use these products returned approximately 53 metric tons of medical waste through this service. Material recovered via mailback (including sharps, injectables, and containers) is sterilized, shredded, and sent to a waste-to-energy facility for incineration with energy recovery.

Amgen recycles and/or properly disposes of the various waste streams associated with the delivery devices our engineers test in the development of our combination products. We also shred and recycle packaging materials, such as inserts and secondary packaging, associated with devices tested.
