Amgen Ranks 26th on Wall Street Journal’s List of Best-Managed Companies

The ranking looks at the 250 largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. and how they perform on five dimensions: customer satisfaction, employee engagement and development, innovation, social responsibility and financial strength.

Legendary management guru Peter Drucker had a simple way of describing a company’s effectiveness: “Doing the right things well.”

According to The Wall Street Journal’s annual list of best-managed companies – compiled in partnership with the Drucker Institute – Amgen appears to be doing the right things well. Amgen ranked #26 on this year’s list – up from #43 last year. Microsoft was the #1 company on the list.

The ranking analyzes the 250 largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. and how they perform on five dimensions: customer satisfaction, employee engagement and development, innovation, social responsibility and financial strength.

Like ‘health,’ you can’t see effectiveness per se. But you can assess whether a company is effectively managed by measuring individual indicators in the same way that you can measure whether someone is healthy by looking at their cholesterol count, neural activity, lung capacity and bone density.
