A 2023 survey from the American Heart Association with The Harris Poll shows more than half (51%) of Americans who have had a heart attack or stroke don't prioritize lowering LDL or "bad" cholesterol despite the increased risk that a high LDL cholesterol level poses for a future event. The Lower Your LDL Cholesterol Now™ initiative, sponsored nationally by Amgen, aims to change this.
The survey was conducted in May of this year among more than 3,000 US adults, including 503 who have suffered a heart attack or stroke. It showed that while 75% of those who have suffered a heart attack or stroke reported having high cholesterol, only 49% prioritize lowering their cholesterol. This poses a concern as LDL or "bad" cholesterol significantly contributes to the risk of a subsequent cardiovascular event.
LDL cholesterol is one of the most easily modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. This initiative is focused on elevating the public's understanding of the relationship between LDL cholesterol and heart attack and stroke. It encourages patients to know their LDL cholesterol number and develop a treatment plan with a healthcare professional to lower it, as appropriate.
