UPLIFT Funds Creative Solutions to Global Psoriasis Gaps

In 2020, the Amgen-sponsored UPLIFT survey uncovered a strong disconnect between patients’ perceptions of their psoriasis and standard measures of disease severity. Despite millions of people in the U.S. and around the world experiencing psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis1, many patients still feel a disconnect with their physicians.2 To address these issues, Amgen has collaborated with the International Foundation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA), most recently with the UPLIFT Innovation Program, an initiative focused on challenges faced by the psoriatic disease community and their healthcare providers. Building on earlier Amgen/IFPA work, patient organizations were invited to answer the question, “How can we boost collaboration between people living with psoriatic disease and their healthcare providers to establish and achieve shared treatment goals?” A global panel of health experts and patient advocates selected four projects to tackle this challenge.

US: Creating Resources to Improve Collaboration

The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) knows that improving shared decision-making can address the disconnect between patient and provider perceptions of psoriasis severity, treatment goals, and satisfaction by enhancing their ability to effectively communicate.

Nearly 60% of individuals with psoriasis report low shared decision-making with their healthcare provider. With the donation from the UPLIFT Innovation Program, NPF will provide five resources to improve the ability of patients to collaborate with their healthcare providers, including guides and videos for preparing for appointments and how to take an active role in your health.

Taiwan: Healthcare Providers Learn the "Tango" of Shared Decisions

The Psoriasis Association of Taiwan worked with patients who still feel uncomfortable participating in the shared decision-making process with their doctors. In 2021, with the UPLIFT Innovation Program, the Psoriasis Association Taiwan created a patient decision aid that is friendly and easy to understand and now they can plan the next phase.

We will enhance quality dialogue through four shared decision-making workshops with physicians to help them. In the activities, we will let physicians better understand what patients did not say and what kinds of unmet medical needs they worry and care about. The shared decision-making process is just like two people dancing a tango. They need to cooperate. Through practical role-playing, we will provide opportunities to build consensus and trust between patients and physicians.

US: Building a System to Address Unmet Needs

Asociación Puertorriqueña de Ayuda al Paciente de Psoriasis (APAPP), based in Puerto Rico, aims to address the unmet needs of individuals living with psoriatic disease and healthcare providers through a comprehensive solution that focuses on enhancing collaboration and education.

With support from the UPLIFT Innovation Program, our organization will establish a streamlined referral system that connects patients with relevant specialists, facilitating timely appointments. We will also collaborate with dermatology and rheumatology associations to ensure a network of experts is readily available.

Peru: Facilitating Close Conversations Without Fear

Asociación de Psoriasis y Artritis Psoriásica Perú believes it is important for patients to feel empowered to talk about their disease with their healthcare providers without fear.

We will use the donation from the UPLIFT Innovation Program to encourage collaboration between people living with psoriatic disease and their healthcare providers. Friendly and close conversations between a healthcare provider and a psoriatic disease patient will be recorded via podcast format. Patients will propose questions and receive specialized, evidence-based information from medical professionals in non-medical, clear language. With this tool, we will strengthen the relationship between physicians and patients, so they perceive each other as partners sharing a goal.
